Common procedures

Haemodialysis

Performed in Nephrology.

What is it?

Haemodialysis is a treatment for serious kidney failure: a machine, called an artificial kidney, filters the blood to remove waste the kidneys can no longer remove. The cleaned blood is then returned to the body.

What to expect

Sessions take place regularly, often three times a week, and last several hours. The care team watches the person throughout the session.
